Providence St. Mel earns tight victory over Morton

Providence St. Mel outlasted Morton to earn its first win at the 56th annual Proviso West Holiday Tournament, 63-58. 

The Knights rallied late in the first quarter, using a 15-7 run to build an eight-point lead. Providence St. Mel's momentum continued into the early portions of the second and they built an 11-point lead at 24-13. Morton fought its way back into the game near the end of the half, but the Knights led 30-23 at the break. 

Morton shot 50 percent from the field and led the rebounding battle 21-11, but turned the ball over 14 times in the opening half. 

The Mustangs chipped away at the deficit in the third and tied the score for the first time since the opening minutes at 34-34. Stephon Jordan, Tyric Edwards, and Malik Jones all tallied four points for Morton in an 11-7 run. The teams headed to the fourth tied at 38. 

The game remained within one possession until the 1:00 mark when the Knights’ Tayeon Neal scores four straight points and then Jason Mason put back his own miss as a part of a 6-0 run. Detallian Brown quickly came back down the floor and knocked down a three to answer and cut the Morton deficit to 60-58. Providence St. Mel hit three free throws down the stretch to ice the game. 

Tim Ervin II led the Knights with 15 points, including 4-of-4 from downtown. Morton’s Jordan tied for the game-high with 15.
