Box Score

Whitney Young led by double digits for the majority of the second half in claiming the 56th Annual Proviso West Holiday Tournament title with an 80-71 win over Morgan Park.

It is the fifth PWHT championship for the Dolphins who were also champions in 2001, 2002, 2007, and 2009.

Tournament MVP Lucas Williamson led the Dolphins with 27 points on 10-of-14 shooting, 2-of-5 from the three-point line and 5-of-5 from the charity stripe. He also added nine rebounds in 31 minutes.

Whitney Young came out of the gates firing on all cylinders, jumping out to a 13-5 lead by scoring on six of its first seven possessions. Morgan Park fought its way back into the game towards the end of the quarter, sparked by four assists from Ayo Dosunmu and eight points from Cam Irvin. Trailing by seven, the Mustangs scored four points in the final 14 seconds of the quarter to pull within three at 25-22.

Morgan Park continued its momentum into the second quarter, scoring the first bucket to pull within one. The Dolphins held on to their lead and extended it to seven on a beautiful fast break. After a long pass, Williamson kept the ball inbounds and fed Javon Freeman for an emphatic slam. The Dolphins posted a 4-0 run in the final 2:20 of the half and led by eight at the break.

Williamson led all first-half scorers with 15. The Dolphins shot 54 percent and outrebounded the Mustangs 22-14. Morgan Park’s bench chipped in for 14 points and Dosunmu dished out six assists to keep the Mustangs close.

After the Mustangs knocked in the first basket of the second half, Whitney Young scored the next six points to extend a 12-point lead. The Dolphins added to their advantage throughout the rest of the quarter, outscoring the Mustangs 20-14 in the third and taking a 59-45 lead into the final period.

Morgan Park made its charge late in the fourth, cutting the deficit to single digits for the first time in the second half on an Dosunmu steal and layup with 1:34 to go. But it was too little too late as Whitney Young made its free throws down the stretch and defeated the Mustangs by nine to claim the title.

Whitney Young’s Craig Beaudion and Xavier Castaneda joined Williamson in double figures with 16 and 15 respectively. The Dolphins shot 53 percent from the floor, 3-of-7 from downtown, and 15-of-23 from the free-throw line.

Irvin, Lenell Henry, and Cam Burrell all tallied 12 points for the Mustangs, while Dosunmu finished with eight points and eight assists.
