Orr Races To Proviso West Holiday Tournament Championship

The Orr Spartans (11-2), playing in the Proviso West Holiday Tournament for the first time in school history, captured the 2017 PWHT Title with a 77-62 win over the Whitney Young Dolphins (13-2), the tournament’s defending champions.

Orr took it to the Dolphins to start the first quarter, 14-2 run, capped by a dunk for Emanuel Oneal on the break with 3:46 to play in the quarter.

Whitney Young spent the rest of the first half chipping away, cutting the lead down to six, 37-31, when Xavier Castaneda converted on a pair of free throws with 56 seconds to play in the half. Orr then scored the final points of the half on a slam for Raekwon Drake, pushing the score to 39-31 at the half.

Young continued to chip away, eventually taking their first (and only) lead of the night, 46-45, when Javon Freeman knocked down a jumper midway through the third quarter. Orr then scored the final six points of the quarter and carried the run into the fourth, scoring the first seven in the period, to open a 58-46 lead and never looked back.

Drake and Dannie Smith led the way for the Spartans with 22 points apiece while Oneal and Chase Adams added 11 and ten points respectively. Drake rounded out a tournament MVP performance with 11 rebounds while Smith collected a game-high 12 rebounds.

For the Dolphins, Freeman finished with a game-high 23 points while Castaneda added 16 points and six assists in the losing effort.

For the Dolphins, it was their sixth appearance in the tournament championship game, falling in the championship round for the first time.
